XML Products

Moving between the expressive power of QuarkXPress and the dynamic world of XML is now possible without sacrificing fine control over your material. Apropos Toy & Tool Development's products give you the creative flexibility you've been seeking.

The following are XTensions for use with QuarkXPress 4.04 and up, on Macintosh and Windows95/98/NT/2000:

RoustaboutXT 2.0

What is it?

Virtually anything that can be done to text within QuarkXPress can be captured in exported XML or applied to imported XML automatically with RoustaboutXT. What's more, font changes to handle symbols, ligatures and ornaments are completely under user control. Even anchored text and pictures are supported. With RoustaboutXT, anything goes.

What are its key features?

  • RoustaboutXT is ideal for adapting text containing mathematical and scientific symbols, as well as such typographical refinements as ligatures and ornaments. Users can guide the management of these characters via a Font Encoding mapping file
  • users can customize the name and attributes of the XML elements processed by specifying a Name mapping file.
  • each of the mapping files conforms to a simple XML DTD.
  • RoustaboutXT creates XML files with a simple, fixed document structure by default, convenient for transformation scripting.
  • compatible with for QuarkXPress 4.04 and up, on Mac and Win95/98/NT/2000.

What's new in this version?

  • it imports! The Name and Font Encoding mapping files have been redesigned to accomodate import-specific issues. Most notably, users can control font changes to handle symbols, ligatures and ornaments.
  • anchored text and pictures, as well as hidden data are now supported. Anything in a QuarkXPress text flow (ie at the "Story" level and below) can now be exported or imported, with all applicable style and formatting information.
  • new menu items allow RoustaboutXT to avoid possible conflict with other XML and TEXT filters.
  • a "Hitch" feature has been added to enable the use of RoustaboutXT as a traditional text filter (ie via the troublesome "Get Text/Save Text..." interface), for use with Applescript and batching XTensions.
  • an "Update Maps" command allows users of RoustaboutXT 1.0 to automatically update their Name and Font Encoding mapping files to the new format.

Who's it for?

RoustaboutXT will be of interest to those concerned with fine control over the export of formatted text from QuarkXPress.

RoustaboutXT 2.0 is now available for purchase online. A limited version may be downloaded for evaluation.

An updater for licenced copies of RoustaboutXT 1.0 is available for download at no additional cost.

Note: RoustaboutXT 1.0 users please see our brief discussion of changes in functionality since version 1.0.

XPress XML 2.0

What is it?

XPress XML brings to QuarkXPress the XML import/export bare necessities at a suitably modest price. Not sure whether XSL transformations are for you? Skip it. Can't choose between DTDs and XML Schemas? Decide later. Perhaps best described as an XML reincarnation of the traditional XPress Tags filter, XPress XML offers less XML technology than any other QuarkXPress-to-XML conversion tool.

What are its key features?

  • XPress XML imports and exports formatted text to and from QuarkXPress in much the same way as the the XPress Tags filter does, but because the XPress XML format is XML, it is easier to learn and XPress XML files can be used by any standard XML application, such as a browser, editor or transformation tool.
  • simple, fixed document structure for convenient transformation scripting.
  • uses the same formatting codes as the XPress Tags filter, which are documented in the QuarkXPress manual and are already familiar to experienced XPress Tags filter users.
  • for QuarkXPress 4.04 and up, on Mac and Win95/98/NT/2000.

What's new in this version?

  • new menu items allow XPress XML to avoid possible conflict with other XML and TEXT filters.
  • a "Hitch" feature has been added to enable the use of XPress XML as a traditional text filter (ie via the troublesome "Get Text/Save Text..." interface), for use with Applescript and batching XTensions.
  • myriad bug fixes.
  • that's it. it's still as simple as ever -- just the XML bare necessities.

Who's it for?

Novice and expert QuarkXPress users alike... anyone who needs to get formatted text into or out of QuarkXPress.

XPress XML 2.0 is now available for purchase online. A limited version may be downloaded for evaluation.

An updater for licenced copies of RoustaboutXT 1.0 is available for download at no additional cost. Users of XPress XML 1.0 or 2.0 can cross-upgrade to RoustaboutXT 2.0 for less than the full price of RoustaboutXT 2.0
